A teenager suspected of being involved in the killing of Giuseppe Gregory outside a pub in Stretford, Manchester, in May 2009 was arrested in the Netherlands yesterday.
The 17-year-old was a target of Project Gulf – a multi-agency initiative to tackle organised crime in Salford. He is the eighth fugitive to be caught since the project was launched seven months ago.
Joint working between SOCA, Greater Manchester Police and the Royal Marechaussee in Rotterdam led to his arrest. He will be appearing at an extradition court in Amsterdam today.
SOCA's Matt Burton said: “Everyone involved in Project Gulf is delighted with this arrest. We are determined to join up our collective efforts to prevent serious organised criminals from causing fear and disruption to local communities. Yesterday's result demonstrates that when you combine the power of a local and an international approach there is no safe place for fugitives.”
Giuseppe was gunned down as he sat in a car outside the Robin Hood pub two years ago. In March 2010 another two teenagers were jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering him following a month-long trial at Manchester Crown Court.
The Project Gulf team includes representatives from Greater Manchester Police, Salford Council, SOCA, UK Border Agency, Environment Agency, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, DVLA, Department of Work and Pensions, Security Industry Association, City West Housing Trust and HM Revenue & Customs.
