UK fugitives in Amsterdam targeted by new operation

16 March 2010

A major new international operation to locate UK fugitives in Amsterdam has been launched today.

Operation Return targets UK criminals who may have fled to the Netherlands to avoid capture. By working with the Dutch authorities, Crimestoppers UK and Bel M - the Dutch equivalent of Crimestoppers - SOCA aims to make Amsterdam a hostile environment for British organised crime.

Operation Return has initially identified six UK fugitives known to have links to the Amsterdam region, who are wanted for serious crimes including drug trafficking, robbery and rape.

David Armond, International Director for SOCA, commented:

"We are building on the close co-operation we already have with the Dutch police, which has achieved some outstanding results including the return of 46 criminals wanted in the UK since May 2008. Some of these criminals had moved to the Netherlands as a direct result of the public appeals we have been running with our Spanish colleagues. This new operation is designed to make sure that they cannot find an easy hiding place in the Netherlands."

Dave Cording, Crimestoppers' Director of Operations, said:

"These criminals think they're safe hiding in the Netherlands, but it takes only one call to Crimestoppers to bring them back to the UK to face justice. We need the public's help in helping to catch these fugitives so please contact Crimestoppers anonymously if you know anything by telephoning 0800 7000 in the Netherlands or 0800 555 111 in the UK. Alternatively people can visit our website to pass on information."

The Crimestoppers website is at www.crimestoppers-uk.org/mostwanted.

The appeals are also featured on the Dutch police website at www.depolitiezoekt.nl.
