Vetting

Vetting is fundamental to what we do. We must be confident at all times that our staff are trustworthy.

The security vetting system for staff is a key element of protective security. There are three categories of security clearance:

  • Counter Terrorist Check (CTC);
  • Security Check (SC); and,
  • Developed Vetting (DV).

These allow the holder to view differing levels of sensitive information, with developed vetting being the most thorough form of vetting. When you apply for a job with SOCA we’ll tell you more about the checks we need to make.

How security clearance works

All SOCA staff hold a national security clearance, and all new recruits are required to achieve developed vetting clearance. Depending on circumstances this could be prior to or during the first 12 months of employment.

The vetting process can be seen as intrusive as it encompasses all aspects of an individual’s life and lifestyle. However, the purpose is not to make moral judgements. It’s to establish whether there are any vulnerabilities that would preclude someone from certain types of work or render them liable to pressure. Vetting clearances can take some months to complete.

Once achieved, clearance is subject to regular review. A range of aftercare measures and advice is in place. This ensures that our employees have appropriate help to enable them to maintain their clearance and to deal with any difficulties that may arise.
