Frequently asked questions

Where will I work?

Our Headquarters are in London but we have regional offices across the UK. Our Liaison Officer network operates from locations worldwide. Staff are expected to be flexible in terms of their work location, within reason.

Does everyone have to go through the security clearance process?

All staff, contractors and consultants are required to undergo our security clearance process, also known as vetting, before starting with us.

Are there any other pre-employment checks?

You will be asked to complete a health check questionnaire and undergo a mandatory drug test. References will be taken up.

Can I apply if I have taken drugs?

We realise that some of our candidates may have experimented with drugs in the past and this is not necessarily a bar to your application. As with all aspects of vetting, you must be entirely open in telling us details of your drug usage. However if you have taken drugs in the last 12 months you are advised not to apply. You will be required to undergo mandatory drug testing as part of the recruitment process.

What if I have a criminal conviction?

A criminal record would not necessarily preclude an applicant from being employed by SOCA. Each case is considered on an individual basis and any relevant convictions are taken into account. As part of the vetting process you will be asked to declare any arrests, pending prosecutions, convictions, formal police cautions, or ongoing police enquiries which might lead to prosecution.

What if I am related to, or I am associated with, an individual who has a criminal record?

It is essential that members of SOCA are not compromised in any way by inappropriate associations with known or convicted criminals or other potentially compromising individuals. As part of the vetting process you will be asked to declare such associations and an assessment will be made to ensure any association is compatible with a role within SOCA. There may be circumstances in which the risk posed by the association is considered too high for employment with SOCA to be suitable.

Do you recognise Trade Unions?

Currently SOCA has three trade unions for the purposes of collective bargaining and consultation on behalf of employees. We’re committed to working in partnership with the unions to promote effective and constructive consultation and negotiation.

Can I send you my CV?

We only accept application forms for advertised vacancies.
